Obesity Treatment: Why Diet & Exercise Aren't Enough!
The crux of the issue for people struggling with obesity is that people still don't really want to talk about "obesity treatment".
They want to bash the GLP-1 makers, the people using those meds for reasons other than obesity, blame the whole epidemic on food quality and UPFs, start a new political movement to improve health around food that is basically the same as the one around exercise 20 years ago, or really do anything except deal with the numbers.
There are 140 million Americans suffering from obesity, and 15 million children with obesity. We know diet and exercise alone won't cure their disease, there are hundreds of studies already showing that. So what are we supposed to do? We need to at a minimum:
1) Make healthcare in general but especially for obesity treatment more accessible and more affordable.
2) Educate the next generation of medical providers about the disease that effects more people than any other, i.e. put obesity curricula into medical schools.
3) Talk more about the intergenerational transmission of obesity including the role of epigenetics (a topic too large for LinkedIn discussion) and
4) Improve food quality while not gas-lighting the country that fixing food alone will cure everyone with obesity.
