Childhood Obesity: Genetics, Treatments & the Future of Health | Real Talk with Dede

Obesity is often discussed as though it comes down to a simple equation: calories in versus calories out. But the science tells us the story is much more complex.

In my recent conversation on Real Talk with Dede, we explored the many factors that influence obesity, particularly during childhood. We discussed the role of genetics and biology in weight regulation, why early intervention matters, and how our understanding of obesity continues to evolve.

We also looked at the changing landscape of treatment, including newer medications and the emerging discussion around intergenerational transmission of obesity. These developments are reshaping how we think about prevention and treatment—and challenging some of the assumptions that have shaped the conversation for years.

My hope is that conversations like this encourage us to approach obesity with greater curiosity, compassion, and an appreciation for the science behind it. Understanding the complexity is an important step toward developing better solutions for children, families, and future generations.
