Beyond the Blame: Understanding Obesity Differently

For too long, obesity has been reduced to a simple message: eat less and move more. But after more than two decades of treating children with obesity and studying the biology behind weight regulation, I've learned that the reality is much more complex.

In this episode of Derive Insights, I join Etu Daniel for a conversation about what really influences obesity, from genetics and development to the biology of fat cells and the body's mechanisms for regulating weight.

We talk about why people can experience obesity very differently, why traditional explanations often fall short, and why understanding the underlying biology is so important when thinking about treatment. We also discuss the harm caused by shame and blame and what can happen when we replace judgment with a more compassionate, evidence-based approach.

The more we learn about obesity, the better equipped we become to treat it and to support the people living with it.
