The Real Reason Your Kid Can’t Lose Weight
I recently joined Uncle Marv’s Unhealthy Podcast @unclemarv for a conversation that I believe more people need to hear.
We talked about childhood obesity—not as a matter of willpower or personal failure, but for what it actually is: a chronic, biologically driven disease. Too often, children and families are told to “eat less and move more,” and when that doesn’t work, they’re left feeling blamed and discouraged. The reality is far more complex.
We discussed how genetics and epigenetics play a major role, how a child’s risk can be influenced even before birth, and why the body actively defends its weight—even when someone is doing everything “right.” This is not about choice. It’s about biology.
We also touched on how we define and screen obesity, including the limitations of BMI, and what treatment options truly look like today. From lifestyle support to medications like GLP-1s, and in some cases bariatric surgery for adolescents, there are evidence-based tools available. These are not shortcuts—they are medically appropriate interventions that can change the trajectory of a child’s health.
The earlier we address this, the better the long-term outcomes. Left untreated, obesity can lead to lifelong metabolic complications. But with the right approach, we can intervene early and effectively.
This is a conversation about understanding, not judgment—and about giving patients and families real options that work.
